The man behind the idea

Daniel Schumann is a seasoned development consultant based in Tunis, Tunisia. For years he has managed complex, multi-million infrastructure programmes funded by international donors across Africa. He knows the field inside out — the terrain, the pressure, the accountability cycles, the donor expectations.

But knowing the field did not make the work easier. If anything, it made him more aware of just how broken the tools were.

After a full and demanding day in the field, Daniel would come home and continue working in his room — cross-referencing spreadsheets, chasing discrepancies, assembling donor reports by hand from a dozen disconnected files.

No time for a run. No time for himself. Just Excel files, copy-paste, and the weight of knowing the numbers still were not reconciled.

This was not an exception. This was the job — every week.

One conversation changed everything

One evening, Daniel mentioned something that had been on his mind for a long time: he had searched everywhere for a tool that could handle all of it — financial tracking, procurement, EVM, reporting, offline field operations — in one place. Built specifically for the realities of donor-funded programmes in developing countries. Not a generic project management app. Not another template. Something built for his world.

He could not find it. Nobody had built it.

That is when I — Walid Azar, a logistics and sales consultant who had developed a deep interest in AI and advanced prompting techniques — said: let’s build it.

Not as a developer. As someone who had learned to harness AI tools to architect and ship real, production-grade software — working alongside a network of IT professionals and students across Tunisia, Morocco, and France who helped push TRI-LO to the standard international programmes deserve.

Daniel was our first user. And our toughest critic.

When TRI-LO was ready, Daniel did not just test it. He ran his own programme on it — FICOL II — from day one. Every edge case, every missing feature, every friction point came from him using it under real conditions: real stakes, real deadlines, real donor accountability.

That is not a beta test. That is a guarantee.

Daniel’s problem is not unique. It is shared by everyone carrying the weight of complex, donor-funded programme management without the right tools.

What we actually set out to do

TRI-LO is not a startup trying to disrupt development finance. It is a practitioner-built tool with one goal: give back time — to the consultants working nights, to the programme managers missing bedtime stories, to the field agents who deserve better than a broken connection and an outdated spreadsheet.

We are also here to make life easier for donors and oversight bodies — better data means faster decisions, cleaner audits, and programmes that actually deliver on their objectives.
